My experience as a Marketing and Promotions Student Intern for the Athletic Department was exciting, engaging, and eventful. When I was given the opportunity to work with the Athletic Department, I knew I had a chance to get students more involved and draw a bigger crowd to games.
Being raised in a house that revolves around the Pittsburgh sports teams schedules, I have loved being an active fan at games. With that in mind, I wanted to create a better student atmosphere at events. I had the opportunity to be co-director of the Dukes football team and women’s lacrosse team. The football games were always long days, but we managed to have fun and make the time go by fast. It would not have been possible for a game to run smoothly without the help of the other interns. During the games we would toss tshirts, beads, and mini footballs out to the fans. I loved seeing the students scream and get wild in order for a tshirt to be thrown their direction. I also enjoyed going on the field the last quarter of the football game after all of our responsibilities were done to watch the Dukes fight for a victory. My favorite memory was when we got to meet Dan Marino!
During the winter, I got to promote athletics at Commuters PB&J and other events. I also got to spend a lot more time on Photoshop which has helped me in so many different ways outside of the internship.
Once spring rolled around it was time for the lacrosse season. We posted many flyers, posters, and tweets to promote the games. What we learned by spring was that no matter what season it was, there was always plenty of work to be done in the office.
I could not have asked for a better internship experience. Each member of the intern team contributed something special and we had great bosses that helped push us and develop skills that we will be able to take to our jobs one day. Katie and Nicole helped each one of us accomplish goals that we never thought would be possible. I’m excited to see the student involvement grow in the Athletic Department and can’t wait to attend more sporting events this school year. Let’s Go Dukes!
